Non, je ne regrette rien

He loves his big sister!

I am incredibly happy with how my homebirth turned out, but now that I’ve had time to process it there are some things I could have done differently.  Now, I say that with the caveat that I think everything happened exactly as it needed to for a positive outcome.  For example, I am certain I dodged a bullet when my midwife dumped me.  That was probably the best thing that could have happened.  I’m sure she would have insisted on all the little intrusions that are so necessary and on the checklist of a midwife’s duties.  I’m pretty sure she would not have been as content to let me work out how to move the baby down and would have eventually sent me to the hospital when Henry refused to budge from the spot he had wedged himself.  I would have missed out on an amazing experience that has changed me for the better.

So what things might I change?

The Midwife Mess

 Does this look like IUGR?

It happened like this:

I am a 33 year old plus-sized mama of four children. I have never had any health concerns other than the actual weight on my body, and my pregnancy had been going well: good blood pressure, no gestational diabetes, baby looked great on the ultrasound I had in February, I had been drinking lots of water, walking, and eating mindfully. Having a home birth was important to me, and I had been looking forward to it and doing my best to be as healthy as I could be.

The Homebirth of Henry Rupert

homebirth pic 1

I have so much to catch up on!  Taking a blogging vacation the last part of my third trimester has left me with so much to tell you, but before I post about anything I want to tell you about my new baby!   On May 20th 2013 I gave birth to my fifth baby, a boy we named Henry Rupert after my grandfather and James’ father.

This will be a long post, so get comfy!

Proof That I Have Nothing But Baby on My Brain

Yeah. I got nothing else. This would be why I haven’t been blogging. I expect next month I will start filling this blog with pictures of baby, thoughts about baby, and maybe even an update about how the midwife situation ended… But I don’t want to focus on that mess right now. I hope you like babies…. Because that’s all I’ve got on my mind! Continue Reading

My Birth Kit is Here!

Happy Birthday to me! I’m 33 today, and my birth kit arrived this morning from In His Hands Birth Supply! It was really simple to do- I just searched the site for my midwife’s name, and I ordered the kit she prefers. It arrived quickly too, since I ordered it on Monday afternoon! Continue Reading

A Weighty Issue

So now I have to work up the courage to say “I do not want to be weighed and I do not want the scan” to my very nice midwife. I am not good at standing up for myself. I am not good at advocating for myself with health care providers. I struggle with feeling ashamed and apologetic about my size, and feel like I have to accommodate their wishes to the point that when I was in labor with Willow I would apologize to the nurse every time I had a contraction. So now, I’m trying to figure out how to deal with my fears and tell my midwife that I am refusing the scan, while also dealing with the fear that they might choose to drop me as a patient because I refuse it.Continue Reading

33 Weeks

Right now I feel like all this extra me, this roundness that I lament and cry over, that I have wished away for most of my life, has purpose. I am growing a tiny person, and my body is amazing. Continue Reading

Thank You.

I want to say THANK YOU to my readers and page followers. My homebirth fundraiser went OVER my goal- which is just…… Insane. I didn’t think that would happen, and I am so happy, and so touched that so many people (101 contributors!) wanted to help me reach my goal! Thank you all so much for supporting me! Continue Reading

28 Weeks: Ultrasound!

We went for an ultrasound appointment this past Thursday, and I got to see my little bean for the first time! The clinic was an interesting experience- we went to a place that has extremely decent rates for paying out of pocket (we don’t have insurance), an outreach clinic for a rural (and apparently largely Amish) area.
